This study looks into the little studied phenomena of individualism in Turkey, and its relationship with democracy. The book is built around a research that aims to measure the level of individualism. Under the pressure of modernization against traditional values, Turkish society finds a way to compensate all in a fascinating transition phase.Started as a masters thesis for Boğaziçi University, the book takes a snapshot of the Turkish society with respect to some values and their relationship with democracy. The research points to a society with dominating collectif values, while hinting to the circumstances that would improve individualism. The main emphasis of the book is to have an insight into the social foundations of democratic attitude. Main findings of the research indicates a strong grip of nationalism and religion on the values and shows the need for pluralism in order to stimulate genuine democracy.Nurten ÖzkordayGraduated from Boğaziçi University English Literature and Linguistics Department, followed by masters at the Sociology Department in the same University.
